Daschbosch Mossiesdrift Steen
This exceptional old-vine Chenin Blanc comes from bush vines planted in 1962 on the Mossiesdrift farm in Breedekloof, on the eastern edge of Paarl. The vineyard is registered with South Africa’s Old Vine Project, with the naturally low-yielding vines producing just 4–5 tonnes per hectare. The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-March to capture maximum concentration and balance.
After being destemmed and crushed, the grapes undergo a period of cold soaking before a slow fermentation at 15–22°C to enhance flavour and aromatic complexity. Fermentation takes place in third- and fourth-fill barrels over approximately three weeks, using a combination of indigenous and selected yeasts. The wine is then left on its thick lees for six months, followed by a further eight months of barrel ageing.
Rich, elegant and wonderfully complex, this is a superb expression of old-vine Chenin Blanc. Aromas of ripe mango and citrus are layered with hints of butterscotch and spice, while the palate is concentrated and generously fruited, with a creamy, textured mouthfeel. Taut, refreshing acidity provides balance and precision, carrying flavours of ripe peach and dried apricot through a long, beautifully poised finish.
