Matawhero Irwin Chardonnay
Named after Bill Irwin, the founder of Matawhero and a pioneer of modern New Zealand viticulture, Irwin Chardonnay is the estate’s flagship white wine, showcasing the exceptional quality of Gisborne’s Golden Slopes.
Produced exclusively from 100% Mendoza Chardonnay grown in the renowned Tietjen Vineyard, this wine comes from a site celebrated for crafting award-winning Chardonnay for more than two decades. The elevated, clay-rich slopes with limestone influences provide ideal conditions for producing fruit with outstanding concentration and balance.
Hand-harvested in the cool of the morning, the grapes are gently pressed before fermentation in a combination of American and Hungarian oak barriques. Full malolactic fermentation and ten months on the lees create a beautifully textured wine, where the oak is seamlessly integrated with generous stone fruit flavours, citrus notes and a creamy, elegant finish.
Rich yet refined, this Chardonnay is a superb match for premium seafood, particularly scallops, crayfish and lobster.
