Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs Alte Reben

‘This vineyard is directly adjacent to the eastern side of the Prälat and is so steep that, centuries ago, stone steps were built into the hillside so that workers could reach the vines more easily. If the wines from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr seem like a graceful “ballerina,” those from the Treppchen resemble muscular free-style climbers. The iron-rich, red slate soil produces wines that are full-flavoured, racy and complex, with an intense mineral aftertaste.’ Dr Loosen’s website

We’ve worked with Dr Loosen’s wines for a long time now and they are always stunning.  The Grosse Gewaches Alte Reben is their old vine Riesling from their very top tier of quality.  For the money, it is truly stunning and will keep for decades.

Producer Profile

The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the family for over 200 years and possesses some of Germany’s most respected and spectacular vineyards. Top sites from the villages of Bernkastel, Graach, Wehlen, Ürzig and Erden present their own different characteristics like red slate, blue slate, red volcanic conglomerate soil, dangerously steep slopes and in some cases ungrafted vines that can be up to 140 years old. Whatever factors come into play it is clear that they contribute to the unique and exhilarating discoveries that can be found upon opening up a bottle of Dr. Loosen.
