Domaine de Dionysos La Deveze, Organic
This is astonishingly good value. It’s as good as some Chateauneuf. It is a recent addition to our already strong (although we say so ourselves) Rhone range – and at the moment it’s outstripping all of them. Super stuff.
Producer Profile
Benjamin Farjon’s ancestors trace their arrival in this region of the southern Rhone back to 1720 when the family escaped the plague then raging in the city of Marseilles, founded as Massilia over 2500 years ago by Phocaean Greek colonists from the coast of Asia Minor. The family roots are so firmly implanted here that they have even given the name to their little hamlet north of Uchaux around which their parcels of vines now total some 50 hectares. As usual in this part of the world, the principal variety is Grenache and they even have an old parcel of relatively rare ‘Grenache Gris’. Other varieties include Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan for the red wines, with Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier available for the whites.
