Valentine’s Day Offer

Those among you who open our mails regularly will know that three weeks ago we had a great offer from a wholesaler who, with their restaurant customers being closed, had significant overstocks of nichey, interesting, on-trade wines on which they did a short-term one-off offer. We went back to them and found that the two most popular wines from the last deal – the Franciacorta and the Riesling (for which people literally queued up to clean us out of stock) were still just about available. So we bought some more. We’ve also added a monster South African red, with some lovely bottle age, from super-premium Stellenbosch producer, De Trafford. These are seerious wines, folks.

One bottle of each of the three below would usually be £76; we’ll offer the three together for £50.

VineMind 2018 Clare Valley Riesling, Australia, £18 Save £5 now £13

If you aren’t aware, Clare Valley is a relatively cool valley at altitude, inland from Adelaide in Australia. It is famous for being one of the absolute best places on Earth for super-vibrant, dry, lime-cordial-infused Riesling. It’s outstanding; the only problem, usually, is that prices are often £20 plus. Not now. Treat yourself; this is gorgeous with fish, chicken, smoked meats, Asian food, cheeses.
De Trafford Merlot 2012, Stellenbosch, South Africa, usually £30 save £11 now £19
This has matured beautifully, and at 8 years old is now gorgeous, stunning wine; give it a decant and it’ll show you even more. You don’t actually need a decanter; pop it in any jug using a tea towel (or similar) to whip out any sediment, then just pour it back into the bottle. Job done. De Trafford’s sited in the middle of the ultra-premium Helderberg sub-region, along with Rust en Vrede, Ernie Els and the boys. This is the real heartland of Stellenbosch’s best red wine area.
Franciacorta Brut, Contadi Castaldi, £28 Save £10 now £18
Franciacorta is Italy’s finest sparkling wine region. It is in the north, in the Alpine foothills. Made using the same grape varieties and methods as Champagne, it is quite simply of one the World’s great sparkling wine regions. Again, price (but also availability; most sells locally) is often a barrier to entry; at this price we expect to sell out in days. I have bagged a couple for Valentine’s Day myself.
