Christmas Case – £81.50 (with a sweetie)
Smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, and pastries – Fizz and Light white
Cava Brut Reserva, Francesc Ricart, £16 – two years of bottle age make this as ‘serious’ as some good champagnes. Really toasty, classy stuff and fully worthy of the big day.
‘Le Balbuzard’ Sauvignon Blanc, Domaine Balland, £11 – Emile Balland is our standout Sancerre producer. This is his entry wine, from the same region; it’s gorgeous, and outrageous value. Really pure, minerally Sauvignon and in our opinion in a totally different class to similarly priced Marlborough savvys.
The Meal
Macon Villages, Domaine Fichet, £13.50 – lovely open, ripe Macon, great with the turkey and trimmings, already discounted by £2 to £13.50 on our shelf for Christmas this year and further discounted in this case. A bit of a no-brainer.
Stepp Pinot Noir, Pfalz, £15 – We know, we keep banging on about German Pinot Noir, but really with global warming this is now THE best nation globally for this grape. Gerd Stepp is a sensational winemaker; this is perfect with the main meal of the day.
The Aftermath
Lucale Primitivo, Puglia, £11.50 – By now the taste buds are fatigued and need a full bodied, easy-going red to go with cheese, movies and presents. This won’t let you down.
Sainte Pierre Provence Rose ‘Cuvee Tradition’, £12.50 – THE go-to wine for cold meats, salad and other gubbins in the evening or the next day, is rosé. It’s a double win – a reminder of summer and a drink you can polish off without restraint.
Optional – Coteaux du Layon, Domaine de Clayou, Loire £14 – if you need a sweetie to go with your Christmas pud, mince pies, chocolates and nuts, this is a gloriously honeyed yet light, delicate sweetie that will deliver every time. If you buy it in the deal we’ll knock £2 off the price to £12.
This case is valued at £79.50 – Buy it £10 off for £69.50! Add the sweetie for an extra £12, £81.50.
